Be inspired

Finding inspiration can be a powerful catalyst for your creativity and imagination. By exploring the work of fellow photographers, you can discover new perspectives and ideas, gaining an insight into multiple different techniques, styles and genres. It's important to keep an open mind and appreciate others' work to provide a gateway towards your own creative outlook.

Sources of inspiration

  • Use social media, follow your interests and join a community - connect with like-minded people and share images.

  • Reading books, magazines and articles - pick something up and index your likes and dislikes, then repeat the cycle again.

  • Travel and tour, explore a new location and recce the area - take notes and be curious in your chosen environment.

Studying the masters

I started out as a street photographer, growing up within the creative community of Bristol. My reference points would evolve from the likes of Martha Cooper and Saul Leiter. Their use of shadows and reflections, colour composition and everyday moments moulded me into the photographer that I am today. Whilst having a keen interest in Science Fiction, Film Noir and Dystopian Fiction, I progressively admired other genres and themes, working on other techniques and adapting to new environments. Remember, your portfolio will take shape and eventually gain a personality through your images, which will then help develop an audience.

  • Motivation: Stay driven and pursue your passion.

  • Practice and experiment: Try different techniques, add depth to your images.

  • Take your camera on a recce: Take reference shots, always be ready.

  • Be patient and observant: Wait for opportunities and pay attention to detail.

  • Find your voice: Tell stories that resonate with your audience.

The benefits of being inspired by others who are not necessarily photographers will also enhance and improve your skills. Think about your interests outside of the photography world and see how you can create a visual blend with your work - this will help create your own style.

It's important to learn from your mistakes, explore outside your comfort zone and continue to grow and develop as a creative individual - always try and stand out from the crowd…
