Street photography

Whether it's capturing candid moments, social interactions or urban textures and details - the street photography genre can be a powerful medium for creative expression. Being present, observant and curious will help you capture authentic moments and tell compelling stories through your images. Although, sometimes it can be viewed as a somewhat frustrating and complex genre - wait for the right moment when the ordinary becomes extraordinary and let the streets reveal their secrets through the lens!

Try not to dwell on the settings too much; the use of imagination, being inventive and having innovation is what counts… With the right preparation, technique and approach, you too can capture unique images with your choice of camera. Along with many other key elements to consider, think with your feet and explore as much as you can. Don’t be afraid to embrace the thrill of the unknown. You may uncover a hidden gem…

Key elements

  1. Creativity: Experiment with reflections, motion blur, patterns and detail. Engage with your surroundings in order to capture something unique and creative. You may surprise yourself.

  2. Composition: Use leading lines, framing and symmetry to create visually appealing images. Utilise light to help create interesting effects, such as shadows, silhouettes, highlights and atmospheric perspectives.

  3. Context: Tell a story about the people, place and culture through your lens. Consider the architecture and other surroundings. Maybe even use street art to help highlight social messages/community engagement.

Essential equipment recommendations

  1. Spare battery(ies): Having spare batteries ensures peace of mind without limitations. You don’t want to miss shots due to a dead battery!

  2. Lens hood: Reduce lens flare and ghosting. Protect your lens and improve image quality in harsh lighting conditions.

  3. Camera bag: Avoid drawing attention to your gear. Stay comfortable and protect your equipment compactly.

Additional tips

  • Research your location - know where you are going and what piques your interest. Navigate safely by familiarising yourself with areas of interest.

  • Work with the lights - streetlights, neon signs and traffic etc... Use these to your advantage and understand how these elements can work for you.

  • Try something new - push your creative boundaries and capture fresh, exciting images that may be considered non-traditional.

Important things to remember

  • Stay aware of your surroundings and potential hazards.

  • Keep safe, blend in and observe without drawing attention to yourself.

  • Be mindful and respect people’s privacy and personal space.

With practice, patience and a keen eye, you’ll be able to capture the essence of the streets one frame at a time. Develop new skills and learn from your images…
